Udaipur is different. it’s romantic, it’s welcoming and it’salso got more lakes than any other city in Rajasthan. When col. James Tod, Political Agent to the ‘Western Rajpoot States’ visited Udaipur in 1817 he was swept off his feet by the sheer beauty of this fabled lake city. He called it - ‘The most diversified and most romantic spot on the continent of India’. Udaipur is sometimes referred to as the jewel of India a kingdom ruled by the Sisodia dynasty in the world. The foundation of the city has an interesting legend associated with it. In 1567, troubled by the repeated attacks of the Mughals, the Sisodias moved away from Chittorgarh and headed towards this area. Maharana Udai Singh, the founder, went hunting one day and met a holy man meditating on a hill overlooking the Lake Pichola. The sage blessed the Maharana, and perhaps and perhaps sensing that he was a troubled man, advised Udai Singh to build a palace at this spot. It was indeed an ideal spot with a fertile valley watered by the stream, lakes, an agreeable altitude and the added protection of low hills. The Maharana was only too happy to move to this easily defensible site and founded the city of Udaipur
in 1559 A. D. This city of lakes has maintained much of its old world charm and spreads around the azure water lakes and continues to be sheltered by the lush hills of the Aravallis. It is an interesting blend of sights, sound and experiences.
